2018 Garden To-Do List
With the exception of feeding the birds, our garden has been neglected over winter. Cold blustery winds and the rain don’t really inspire me to get outside much, but one of my goals for 2018 is to make my outdoor space nicer for humans as well as the wildlife so that when more appealing weather arrives (hopefully sooner rather than later) I can make better use of it than I have in previous years. So here it is, my garden to do list for the year ahead… Here’s hoping that making it a blog post makes me a bit more accountable for it!
We’ve got a small greenhouse at the end of our garden, but it’s falling to bits as it hasn’t really been used much during the past couple of years due to health and time constraints. In 2018 I have every intention of changing that and making as much use of it as possible because if there’s one thing I miss, it’s freshly grown tomatoes and chilli peppers!
Our garden fence is pretty much non-existent at the minute, thanks to a storm completely wiping it out. As a result, my poor dog now only gets supervised garden visits so this is definitely a pressing issue that needs to be fixed as soon as possible! Plus, I’m pretty sick of being able to see the neighbours… Who wants that? 😉 Seriously though, I’d spend a lot more time in my garden if I didn’t have to see the neighbourhood.
We currently have more of a compost pile than a bin, so a big goal is to organise that end of the garden and replace it with something more contained.
Maybe it’s because I’m a Cancerian, but I love the moon. One of my big goals for the garden is to plant lots of night blooming/scented flowers as well as white flowers that’ll show up under the lunar light. Not only will this make it a more enjoyable space to sit and enjoy the light of the full moon, but it should also help to attract more moths – another love of mine! I’ve been saving some inspiration to a Pinterest board already, and I’ll be adding more to it as I get ready to plant it out.
Bigger and Better Herb Garden
I adore being able to grab fresh herbs when I’m cooking, so I’ll be planting out some containers with my favourites and placing them near the back door so it’s easy to pop out and grab them when I’m in the kitchen.
I’ve always wanted a pond! Sadly I can’t have a large one as it’s a rental, but the garden is big enough that I reckon I can sneak in a mini pond once it’s a bit more organised out there. I’ve never done this before, so any advice welcome if this is a project you’ve already tackled.
As well as general garden maintenance, I want to get creative! There’s a couple of pretty depressing dirty blank walls in the garden so I’m planning on giving them a new life. I haven’t totally decided on what I want to do, but a mural and attempting moss graffiti are amongst the possibilities.
I already have a little mini bug hotel that I purchased in Aldi, but I want to take the time to build one this year. I find the decrease in insects terrifying, and they’re one of my favourite things to photograph so providing them with plenty of habitats is a top priority!
We’ve had a couple of fleeting visits from hedgehogs in the past, so when it comes to doing up the garden I want to make sure they’ve got a happy home should they return and decide to stick around.
I’m sure more things will come to mind once I start work on it, but this is my 2018 to do list for now.
Do you have any big garden projects planned? I’d love to hear what they are! Let me know in the comments below.
